SBSF Beginner’s guide to salsa
Having doubts?
Well, give it 5 minutes, try it out and you’ll see :)
The “proper” way would be to visit your local salsa dance school (naturally), but just for the sake of argument – you could do it in the privacy of your living room – now.
Just write “salsa basic step” in the YouTube and voila! You will see exactly 14.700 videos explaining the basic salsa step. To cut the long story short, there are 8 beats, during the beat 4 and 8 you don’t have to do nothing, during the two beats you are just returning where you’ve been before – so they don’t count as “steps”… during few you are just staying on one place so basically there are just two “real steps” in the basic salsa combination: step forward and step backward. Everyone can do it (I once knew a guy incapable of performing one of those two… but he was special).
There’s also another way to learn the same step:
Basic salsa step described in 3 easy mind states derived from everyday situations that anyone can relate to:
1. I’m going to step forward… No! Wait! I changed my mind…
2. This takes too long… I’m going to stand on my other foot…
3. Maybe I could go backward… No! I’ll stay here!
Just circle in your mind through those 3 easy mind states and there it is: YOU ARE DANCING SALSA!
What should you expect from salsa
The important thing when embarking on your new hobby-journey is to know what it holds for you so we prepared this little scenario that will demystify a path every dedicated salsa dancer experiences:
1. You will try few steps and realize it’s easy…
2. You will start to learn more steps and combinations and enjoy dancing
3. You will start to regularly visit salsa parties and meet new people and enjoy dancing even more
4. You will fall in love with salsa and travel around the world visiting salsa festivals where you will learn from the best instructors in the world and dance your heart away while having the time of your life.
5. Eventually, you will marry a salsa dancer, have bunch of salsa kids and live happily ever after.
That’s it (Just notice “having the time of your life” and “live happily ever after” parts :).

Salsa Festivals?

Videos to give you a glimpse of how salsa parties, workshops and shows look like:
Tip: Don’t pay attention to the skill or movement combinations these videos portray… instead, try to capture the fun they have playing with the music and pure joy they are blessed with while dancing together.
That’s it future kings and queens of the dance floors… Say no to your everyday desk job personalities and reinvent yourself! Spend your life as poets, painters, artists, adventurers, explorers, daredevils or… dancers :)
